You and your braces have spent quite a bit of time together. But the day will come when it is time to take them off. What can you expect when you start Life After Braces?
Getting your braces off is quick and painless. Once the hardware has been removed, the dentist will then remove any residual dental cement from your teeth. Don’t be surprised if your teeth look a little discolored where the brackets were attached. That’s to be expected and your dentist can clean your teeth and discuss whitening treatments with you. It’s a good idea to get a regular dental exam after your braces have come off.
Your braces may have been removed, but that does not mean that you are done with straightening your teeth. Your teeth and the ligaments in your jaw have not settled into their new positions. To make sure that your teeth don’t drift out of alignment, the dentist will give you a retainer. There is no set time for wearing a retainer, since every person’s mouth is different. Some people must wear a retainer for several months while others may need to wear one at night for the rest of their lives. You will need to follow your dentist’s instructions for wearing yours.
